About Tour De Farm

The Alzu Tour de Farm Mountain Bike Race saw the light for the first time in 2011 and was held annually ever since! The heart and motivation behind this race all originated from the need and the will to give back to the children of Middelburg – our local town.

This event is held at the Alzu N4 Petroport with a track that runs through the Alzu- and neighbouring farms, starting and finishing in the festive atmosphere of the Alzu Tour de Farm Tent Village exhibition area. The cyclists are promised a ‘wow’-experience as the route passes the Rhino and Buffalo game camp. Other types of wildlife can also be seen there. This race is a family event with different distance categories: Marathon, Half-marathon and a Fun race. With our attractive prize money, we draw competitive riders from all over the country and host between 1000 and 1500 cyclists every year – making it one of the biggest mountain bike races in Mpumalanga… and the fastest mountain bike race in South Africa!

Our main beneficiaries include, but are not limited to, Middelburg Primary School, Middelburg Hoërskool and Care Village, the local orphanage. The purpose of the funds generated by this event is to assist youngsters from disadvantaged communities, who are left in dire need to be able to complete their schooling.

The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.

Some history of the event includes the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, that was on the day of the Tour de Farm! We brought in big screens and with the help of all our sponsors, we watched the Springboks triumph on that day, at the event venue.

In 2020 we managed to overcome the challenges of COVID regulations and lock down. We hosted the event over 2 days, with only 80 cyclist per starting batch – which resulted in 19 starting batches! We also adapted our starting times to give cyclists enough time to travel over provincial borders, outside lock down hours. That was also the year that the Tour de Farm had the biggest impact on the lives of our beneficiaries. Hundreds of people were left stranded without jobs, food, some even without housing and in a state of desperation. Never did we expect that the Tour de Farm funds would be the lifeline for so many people.

In 2023 we are faced with the positive challenge of a construction site, as the Alzu Petroport undergo expansion and upgrades. We are forced to host the race further away from the main site. We are looking forward to come home to our official venue in 2024!

Because of the positive change that this race brings into the lives of our children, it encourages and motivates the organizers of this event to keep on making a difference every single year.

We cannot do it without the help of our sponsors, and we are forever thankful to each sponsor that contributes so generously every year.
